Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a single terminal split into three departure halls (1, 2 and 3), about 15 km from the city and 17 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal by train. It is one of Europe's busiest hubs, with more than 60 million passengers a year, so departures are efficient but rarely quiet. Three things shape your departure in 2026: which hall your airline uses, how long security takes (longer than usual since the 2026 contractor switch), and passport control with the new biometric EES if you are leaving the Schengen area. Here is exactly what to expect, with realistic timings below.
Departure times and gates can change late, especially in peak season. Check the board again about 30 minutes before your scheduled time, and always trust the gate shown on the airport screens over an older boarding pass.

The train is usually the fastest and most reliable option: Schiphol's station sits directly beneath Schiphol Plaza, with Intercity and Sprinter services reaching Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 minutes. The Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) links the city centre with the airport, and taxis and ride-hailing drop off at the Departures level. If you are driving, use the short-stay P1-P3 garages or the Kiss & Ride lane for quick drop-offs. In peak season, add a buffer for road traffic and for the walk from the station or car park to your departure hall.
Departure halls 1, 2 and 3 each have their own check-in rows and security filters; follow the signs for your airline. Most lanes now use CT scanners, which often let you keep liquids and laptops in your bag - but the 100ml cabin limit still applies, so pack larger liquids in checked luggage. To avoid the worst of the queues you can reserve a free security time slot on the official Schiphol website up to a few days before departure, which gives you a dedicated lane at your chosen time.
Check in online the day before where your airline allows it (KLM typically opens check-in around 30 hours ahead) so you can head straight to bag drop or security. Bag-drop and check-in counters usually close 40 minutes before departure, and earlier for some intercontinental and charter flights, so do not leave it to the last moment. Weigh and label your bags in advance, and keep passport, boarding pass and any visa or authorisation easy to reach.
If you are flying to a non-Schengen destination you pass border control on the way out. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records a facial image and fingerprints for non-EU travellers crossing the Schengen border, which can add time at peak periods. EU and Schengen nationals, and frequent flyers enrolled in Schiphol's Privium programme, generally move through faster. Have your passport open at the photo page before you reach the front of the queue.
These are conservative guidelines for the summer peak; on quieter days you can trim them. Adjust upward if you are checking bags, flying long-haul, or registering with EES for the first time.

Schiphol has plenty to do beyond the gates: the See Buy Fly shops, a wide choice of bars and restaurants, and pay-in lounges such as the Aspire lounges, plus KLM Crown Lounges for eligible travellers on non-Schengen departures. For a quieter moment, the airport has a small Rijksmuseum annexe and a free panorama terrace for plane spotting. If you cleared security with time to spare, this is where an early arrival pays off.
Under EU Regulation 261/2004, flights departing the EU that are cancelled or arrive three or more hours late may qualify for compensation of 250 to 600 euros depending on distance, unless the cause is an extraordinary circumstance. Regardless of compensation, your airline must provide care during a long delay - meals, refreshments and, if needed, overnight accommodation - and a choice of rebooking or a refund. Keep your boarding pass and any receipts, and deal with the airline's desk or app first.
