How to reach the Zaanse Schans windmills from Amsterdam Airport by train, with times and ticket price.
Take a train from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Zaandam (about 30–40 minutes), then a short Sprinter one stop to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station, a few minutes' walk from the windmills (checked September 2026). Trains leave from beneath Schiphol Plaza.
A second-class ticket from Schiphol to Zaandam starts at about €6.00 one way (checked September 2026), with a small extra for the short hop to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans.
Pay with an e-ticket, OVpay contactless, or the Amsterdam & Region Travel ticket, which also covers Amsterdam transport and other day trips. Buy at ns.nl or a yellow machine at Schiphol Plaza.
Zaanse Schans is an open-air village of working windmills, wooden houses, a clog workshop and a cheese farm on the river Zaan. Entry to the grounds is free; individual mills and museums charge separately. It pairs well with a Keukenhof or Amsterdam day out.
